Renewable energy in Malaysia

Renewable Energy In Malaysia You Should Know

Table of Contents

“Renewable energy in Malaysia? I’ve heard it before, but, I don’t know much about it.”

Renewable energy is energy that constantly replenishes because it will not vanish like the sun and wind. But some of it will not last forever if not handled carefully, like water.

It has been formed with expertise in various fields, in order to protect the natural resources. Not to mention, with the increase of population, we need more options to generate electricity.

It started 2000 years ago when they mimic ‘waterwheels’ which convert the energy of moving water into electrical energy.

Are you excited to know which renewable energy that exists in Malaysia?

Let’s check it out!

Types of Renewable Energy In Malaysia

1. Solar Energy

Solar Energy

Solar energy is created by nuclear fusion from the Sun and never runs out. Radiant light and heat are able to generate electricity.

Solar panel can be placed on our rooftop for commercial, industrial and residential purposes.

For your information, solar panel will be better if facing the sun to collect sunlight and convert to energy, so it will be placed south.

Even though it is costly, it is suitable and has potential for solar energy to expand.

2. Wind Energy

Wind Energy

Wind is used to generate electricity or mechanical power by using kinetic energy through the wind turbines.

There are two types of wind turbines, horizontal-axis turbines and vertical-axis turbines with the same functionality.

For your knowledge, Malaysia faced a low wind speed area compared to other countries. The mean annual wind speed is not more than 2m/s since the minimum speed is 4m/s.

Most of it can be seen in Kuala Terengganu, Mersing and Kudat due to coastal area and windy. However, the wind speed is varies and constantly change from seasons due to monsoons.

3. Hydroelectric

Renewable energy Hydroelectric

Energy that is able to generate power by using a dam or diversion structure and flows the river to create electricity.

To put it simply, the greater the flow of water, the more electricity that can be generated. Hydroelectric dam located in Pahang, Sabah, and Sarawak

Government stated that construction of the Hydroelectric Nenggiri Dam Project will cost RM5 billion and generate 300 megawatts (MW) by the middle of 2027.

Building a dam will be costly thus the aspect of Public and Social Acceptance Study, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Social Impact Assessment (SIA) and Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) need to be taken care of.

Most importantly, hydropower is the largest renewable energy producer in Malaysia with 15% of the country’s total energy generation.

4. Biomass Energy

Renewable energy in Malaysia

Biomass energy occurs when material from plants, animals, wood and waste that get through photosynthesis, after carbon dioxide and water reacting thus convert into nutrients (carbohydrates).

In Malaysia, forestry (wood product), rubber cultivation, cocoa cultivation, sugarcane cultivation and oil palm cultivation are major contributors.

It is located in Teluk Intan with 12.5MW and Tawau as the biggest biomass power plant with 14MW.

Benefits of Using Renewable Energy In Malaysia

1. Reduce Cost Of Electricity Bills

For your information, utility bills can be reduced up to 50% per month. We just need to generate electricity from the sun to power our own home and utilize solar energy as you did to electricity energy. Preserve the energy for personal purposes even though solar energy has batteries.

2. Generates No Emissions

When renewable energy is used in our daily life, pollution will decrease.

There are less emissions and greenhouse gases happening and natural resources are able to be protected and useful for our living.

Cleaner air will be experienced by all humans and health problems will least occur.

For your information, the gas emissions can make humans have respiratory infections, asthma, and lung cancer.

3. Brings Benefits For Economy

In 2021, 18% of renewable energy contributes to Malaysia’s energy mix and is dominated by hydropower technologies. Not to forget, in Malaysia solar photovoltaic (PV) has reach the high

This explains that Malaysia needs expertise from high to low level management to provide these services towards people who are interested as it keeps growing.

Not to forget, the development of the district in order to provide facilities for employees will occur. For example, roads, electricity and street lights.

4. Reduce Harmful Air Pollution

Air pollution can affect our daily life and may cause death. If the Air Pollutant Index (API) reaches 500, a declaration will be announced and all services will be suspended.

Thus, when people implement renewable energy in their life, like in industry or household, harmful air pollution will decrease.

In addition, fossil fuel from transport releases carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and sulphur dioxide.

You have reached the end of the topic!

Congrats and now you are full of renewable energy information that exists in Malaysia.

Renewable energy is important to protect Earth for brighter and safer and avoid pollution that constantly happens.

For the sake of the younger generation that has never experienced flora and fauna, practising green is a great way to protect Mother Earth.

Technology and cost efficiency can be improved to persuade Malaysians to use renewable energy.
